The Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) has been designated by the Management Board of the European Environment Agency (EEA) as a Topic Centre Organisation (TCO) for the 2027–2030 period, within the framework of the European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet). AUA is among the 295 organisations included in the relevant official list.

The designation follows the submission and assessment of an application in accordance with the applicable eligibility criteria. The successful completion of this process marks an important step towards strengthening the University’s international presence and creates new opportunities to contribute its scientific expertise to European collaborations.

TCO status confirms that the University meets the requirements to apply for work as a Topic Centre, either independently or in partnership with other organisations. Topic Centres are organisations or consortia of organisations that undertake specific scientific and technical support tasks for the EEA under contractual agreements.

More specifically, they support the collection, quality control and assessment of environmental and climate data submitted by European Union Member States. They help the EEA use these data to identify environmental trends, assess the impacts of climate change and provide a robust scientific evidence base for the development of European policies.

The work of existing Topic Centres covers biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem assessment; the circular economy and the sustainable management of resources; climate change adaptation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Their activities also encompass land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF), the interactions between the environment and human health, and the transition towards sustainability. In addition, Topic Centres provide specialised support for data management and analysis, as well as the development of digital tools.

For the Agricultural University of Athens, designation as a TCO opens the way to participation in relevant EEA calls and the development of partnerships for the submission of joint proposals. It therefore creates opportunities to participate in projects that connect scientific research with the needs of European environmental and climate policy.
