With a strong presence and remarkable distinctions, the “AUA Running Team” of the Agricultural University of Athens participated in the 12th Marathon Lake Run, held on Sunday, 24 May 2026, in the 10-kilometre race.

The “AUA Running Team”, with the dynamic participation of members of the Agricultural University of Athens academic community — including undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as members of the teaching, research, and administrative staff — once again took part in the event, actively supporting the sporting initiative and achieving significant distinctions.

Among the highlights of the event were the outstanding athletic performances of the University team members. Marta Bonioli, a doctoral candidate at the University of Verona, who is currently conducting part of her doctoral research at the Agricultural University of Athens, secured 1st place in the women’s category. In the men’s category, 2nd place was awarded to Ioannis Lolos, graduate of the Department of Biotechnology of the Agricultural University of Athens, an honours graduate and scholarship recipient currently pursuing his PhD studies at Arizona State University. Having been a member of the “AUA Running Team” since its establishment in September 2021, he did not miss the opportunity to compete once again with his beloved team, despite his brief stay in Greece.

Furthermore, in the context of the celebration of World Environment Day on 5 June, the “AUA Running Team”, together with the Volunteer Team of the Agricultural University of Athens, actively contributed once again to the organisation of the event by carrying out environmental awareness activities and offering valuable assistance to the organisers wherever needed. In recognition of its important contribution, the volunteer team was honoured with an award at the closing ceremony.

The breathtaking route and the impressive finish at Marathon Lake offered unique experiences and memorable images to both participants and visitors alike. The organisers warmly welcomed the running team of the Agricultural University of Athens and honoured it at the end of the event with a commemorative diploma and trophy, as it represented the largest group participation in the race. The “AUA Running Team” warmly thanked the organisers and the TELMISSOS Marathon Runners Club for their hospitality and the excellent organisation of the event.

Through this participation, the Agricultural University of Athens actively honoured World Environment Day by promoting volunteerism, wellbeing, lifelong healthy lifestyle choices, and the protection of the natural environment of Attica.
