“Food Hygiene and Safety: Principles and Modern Tools”

A Contemporary Training Programme

With 15 active, up-to-date training programmes across seven subject areas, the Lifelong Learning Centre of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) plays an active role in the continuing education and professional development of adults, supporting them in upgrading their existing knowledge or acquiring new skills. Its programmes aim to equip employees and higher education graduates of all ages with up-to-date knowledge of the latest developments in science and technology—fields that are evolving at a rapid pace.

The Centre facilitates the transfer of knowledge in an ever-changing labour market, empowering recent graduates, unemployed individuals, professionals working in the primary sector, as well as employees and professionals in public and non-state organisations, through specialised continuing education and professional training programmes. Modern distance-learning methods contribute to the Centre’s commitment to inclusive education, offering learners flexibility in terms of time and location, expanding access to a larger number of participants, and combining synchronous and asynchronous learning. In this way, the Centre exemplifies the educational outreach and openness of the Agricultural University of Athens.

Within this framework, and in response to the growing need to safeguard public health, the programme “Food Hygiene and Safety: Principles and Modern Tools”, comprising 125 teaching hours and 5 ECTS credits, is designed to provide up-to-date scientific knowledge on the prevention, assessment and management of food safety risks. The programme is coordinated by Professor Panagiotis N. Skandamis as Scientific Director.

The programme covers a broad range of contemporary food safety issues, from the fundamental principles of food hygiene, biological, chemical and physical hazards, and the implementation of HACCP, to Risk Analysis, Predictive Microbiology, and Modern Food Safety and Quality Management Systems.
