Free Three-Day Scientific Workshop: “Real-World Applications in Digital Spatially Defined Agriculture: From Drone and Satellite Data to GIS-Based Analysis and Mapping for Decision-Making in Agriculture”

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Research Unit of the Agricultural University of Athens is pleased to announce the organization of a free three-day scientific workshop entitled: “Real-World Applications in Digital Spatially Defined Agriculture: From Drone and Satellite Data to GIS-Based Analysis and Mapping for Decision-Making in Agriculture.” This initiative is developed in response to the evolving practical demands of modern Agronomy and Agriculture—fields fundamentally grounded in applied science—and builds upon the Unit’s extensive research activity and longstanding educational experience. This is an open scientific event, part of the Unit’s outreach program—one of the core pillars of both the laboratory and the Agricultural University of Athens more broadly (Training – Education – GIS AUA),
The workshop program combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practical training. The first day will feature a series of expert lectures delivered in a University amphitheater, focusing on applied case studies involving the use of multispectral and thermal data acquired from drone and satellite platforms. Emphasis will be placed on spatial and temporal crop monitoring, as well as the identification of potential agricultural issues, drawing on findings from both research initiatives and industry-based projects.
The second and third days will be dedicated to practical laboratory training sessions. Participants will engage in hands-on exercises using real datasets derived from various agricultural applications, including kiwifruit, olive, vineyard, cotton, and barley cultivation. Data processing and analysis will be conducted using photogrammetry, remote sensing, and GIS software tools, utilizing datasets and infrastructure developed at research programs (GIS AUA equipment). The practical component aims to enhance participants’ understanding of data-driven decision-making processes related to key agricultural practices, such as irrigation management and fertilization strategies.
Workshop Schedule:
Day 1: Thursday, April 30, 14:00–17:00
Location: Library Amphitheater, Agricultural University of Athens (AUA)
Day 2: Thursday, May 7, 17:00–20:00
Location: GIS Research Unit Classroom, AUA
Day 3: Thursday, May 14, 17:00–20:00
Location: GIS Research Unit Classroom, AUA
A live online broadcast will be available for all sessions.
Registration: Interested participants are invited to register by sending an email to: sgeronti@aua.gr & gisaua@aua.gr
Scientific Coordinator: Dionissios Kalivas, Professor at Agricultural University of Athens (AUA)
