Participation of the Agricultural University of Athens Running Team, “AUA RUNNING TEAM,” in the 11th Marathon Lake Run

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, the 11th Marathon Lake Run took place in the enchanting setting of the Marathon Lake Dam. The Agricultural University of Athens Running Team, AUA RUNNING TEAM, participated dynamically in this beautiful race, both with runners and volunteers.

With a strong sense of love for nature, sports, and solidarity, the AUA runners honored an event with significant environmental and historical symbolism. Along a 10 km route through a natural landscape still bearing the scars of recent devastating wildfires, the team’s participation stood as an act of support and hope for the environment’s regeneration.

Special mention must be made of the volunteers from the Agricultural University of Athens who supported the team’s mission with dedication and enthusiasm. Through their presence at the event site, their assistance in water distribution and post-race cleanup along the lakeside, their support of the runners, and their spread of positive energy throughout the event, they set a remarkable example of service and teamwork.

Additionally, the AUA GIS Research Unit deserves special recognition for its voluntary contribution to the broader effort to assess the environmental impacts of the 2024 wildfire. Using geospatial technologies (GIS and remote sensing), the team contributed to a documented estimation of the extent of the destruction, which significantly affected the race route—an area of outstanding ecological and aesthetic value. This action clearly highlights that the University does not limit itself to its academic mission of research and education but also embraces, promotes, and supports social and environmental responsibility.

The presence of the AUA RUNNING TEAM extends beyond athletic activities, promoting lifelong healthy living, environmental awareness, and community spirit.
