The Agricultural University of Athens participates in the Greek node, METROFOOD-GR, of METROFOOD-RI

METROFOOD-RI is a new European Research Infrastructure (RI) belonging to the Health and Food Sector of the ESFRI European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures. METROFOOD-RI is attended by 48 organizations (research centers, universities, metrology institutes, food analysis laboratories and private companies) from 18 European countries.

METROFOOD-GR, the node of the program in Greece contributes to this effort with the participation of 6 organizations: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as Coordinating structure, Agricultural University of Athens, University of Ioannina, Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Hellenic Health Foundation, Chemical Metrology Service of the General Chemical State Laboratory. The above organizations aim by combining their specialization and research infrastructure to be able to offer qualitative and specialized services on food metrology that will cover a wide range of organizations and social groups such as industries, small businesses, primary sector producers, auditing bodies, public services, consumer associations, research centers, analysis laboratories, etc.

Objectives of METROFOOD-RI are to enhance the quality and reliability of measurements in food, to create and share scientific data, information and metrology tools and to enhance scientific knowledge by promoting collaboration and interaction. The ultimate goal of the program is to enhance scientific excellence in food authenticity, quality and safety by promoting the Science of Metrology in Food and Nutrition both in Europe and globally. The program targets a wide range of companies in all sectors (primary, secondary and tertiary) involved in the production of raw materials, food or services related to food, nutrition and health.

In this effort, on behalf of the Agricultural University of Athens, participate four laboratories of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. The Laboratory of General Chemistry (Prof. P. Tarantilis, Scientific  coordinator for AUA), Laboratory of Chemistry and Food Analysis, Laboratory of Dairy and Laboratory of Oenology and Alcoholic Beverages.
