Official Ceremony Reception of the Professor Emeritus and former Rector of the Agricultural University of Athens, Mr. Andreas Karamanos, as a Full Member of the Academy of Athens.

On Tuesday, April 25 2023, the Official Ceremony Reception of the Professor Emeritus and former Rector of the Agricultural University of Athens, namely Mr. Andreas Karamanos, as a Full Member of the Academy of Athens, was held at the Academy of Athens. At that event, the Rector of the Agricultural University of Athens, Mr. Spyridon Kintzios, as well as the Vice Rectors Mr. Emmanouil Flemetakis, Thomas Bartzanas and Helen Miliou respectively, have been in attendance. The ceremony took place in the presence of a huge amount of personalities coming from the political, scientific and academic world, besides a great number of invited people. Throughout the conduct of the ceremony reception, Mr. Christos Zerefos, the Secretary General of the Academy of Athens, has praised the valuable contribution of Mr. Andreas Karamanos to both education and society. Afterwards, the President of the Academy of Athens, Mr. Michael Stathopoulos, awarded the decoration of the “illustrious gold medal” of the Academy of Athens to the new Academic.

Mr. Andreas Karamanos by his speech, entitled: “The Agricultural Research in Greece. Accomplishments and challenges about future”, has taken a historical stock of the progress made in the field of Agricultural Research in Greece, featuring the work of the numerous research Institutions since their establishment, thus enabling their significant achievements to emerge, which have decisively contributed to the overwhelming development of the agricultural sector, having also supported national economy. Furthermore, he has mentioned the current situation, after the country's accession to the European Union, highlighting the need for the preparation of a national strategy over Agricultural Research, in parallel with the research priorities of the European Union. At the end of his presentation, Mr. Karamanos has outlined the challenges arising, with strong emphasis on the need for taking advantage of all the plentiful opportunities provided by the greek natural environment, with a view to producing high quality products, inasmuch ones with value added, expressing respect for consumers, being in the interests of the environment and sustainable development, too, in addition to dealing with threats that shall be unavoidably encountered  as a result of the climate crisis.
