Granting of the Honorary Doctorate of the Agricultural University of Athens, Mr. George Chrousos, as a Full Member of the Academy of Athens.

The Academy of Athens throughout the Plenary meeting, on Wednesday, February 21 2024, elected Mr. George P. Chrousos, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Endocrinology of the School of Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, who has been also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Agricultural University of Athens, as a Full Member for the vacant seat declared and entitled: “ Medical Sciences: Metabolic and Endocrine diseases”, in respect of Α’ Order of Natural Sciences. Remarkably, the Honorary Doctor of the Agricultural University of Athens and Chairperson of the Scientific Council of the spin-off company, named        Ce.B.Tec, Mr. George Chrousos, has accomplished an internationally recognized work, pertaining to the effect of stress on pathogenicity, related to a large number of medical conditions.

The Rectorate Authorities of the Agricultural University of Athens congratulate Professor, Mr. George Chrousos, on his being awarded with this highest honour, as well as on his longstanding contribution in Science and Education. Mr. George Chrousos, hereinafter referred to as an Academic, has identified and functionally characterized the endocrine and intracellular molecular mechanisms of the beneficial and harmful effect of stress on humans,  while at the same time, he has discovered pathogenetic mechanisms, via which, the prolonged activation of the body's stress system, in response to hormones secretion, may trigger or aggravate “chronic non-communicable diseases”, in addition to increasing the vulnerability of the human organism to specific infectious diseases, such as cancer, whilst they accelerate  ageing, too.

It is worth mentioning that Professor, Mr. George Chrousos is the only Greek Clinician and Researcher, both in Greece and globally, who is ranked amongst the top 250 Scientists worldwide in the Sector of Clinical Medicine, Biology and Biochemistry respectively, confirmed and illustrated by the fact that the Fred Conrad Koch Award, which constitutes an outstanding distinction, has been conferred on him by the American Endocrine Society.

It also noticeable that Professor, Mr. George Chrousos has achieved prestigious and honorable awards for his scientific work, on a national inasmuch an international level, having also participated as a speaker in European and Global Conferences, let alone the prizes he has been awarded, on more than one occasion, by leading Greek, European, and Worldwide Scientific Bodies. In conclusion, his overall scientific contribution has been multidisciplinary and of prime importance since he has broken new ground in Medical Science of Metabolism and Endocrinology.
