Memory functions and efficient study at the University with emphasis on coding.

The interactive small group workshop aims to present the basic mnemonic functions (Roussos, 2011, p.205-210) regarding efficient study at the University and the upcoming February exams. On a theoretical level, the coding and the way in which the information is represented after decoding is going to be discussed. Information is encoded in memory in some form or representation code. This is distinguished into phonological, visual and functional coding. The storage capacity of working memory is limited and is defined by the formula “7+-2 elements”, Ebbinghaus, Herman (1885), Miller, G (1956). On a practical level, we will work with awareness exercises of mnemonic functions such as that of sensory memory in relation to visual and auditory perception and their utilization in study efficiency. We will also try to decode during the reading process the individual way in which the student studies and records the new knowledge in the mnemonic system by studying "aloud", "silent", "writing the important points".
